Apps Guide

This is a list of my favourite applications for iPhone and iPad for pre-production, production and post-production needs in film and television. This is purely my personal opinion based on trying them for myself. What works for me may not work for you.

A lot of these apps are very expensive, as they are so specialist. So before spending your hard-earned money on any app, do 3 things:
1. Check out the app description and screenshots on iTunes.
2. Check the user rating and read the comments for all versions.
3. Look for a video of the app in action on YouTube or Vimeo.

General apps that are good to have

Download A ReminderA REMINDER The standard calendar app on iOS can be cumbersome when you're trying to add new events. This app simplifies the process of adding a new event to your calendar. Simple but useful.

Download SimplenoteSIMPLENOTE A nice service that I use for writing daily to do lists, saving useful notes and jotting down ideas - synced across web and iOS automatically. Alternatively you can try Dropbox or Evernote.

Camera Apps

Download Filmic ProFILMIC PRO So good that it's been used in the Zacuto camera shootout, where the iPhone 4S stood its ground against the Arri Alexa and Sony F65. Allows you to shoot in 24p amongst other formats. A bit unstable on iPhone 4, but mostly reliable on iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

Download SnapseedSNAPSEED A very comprehensive photo editing app which includes automatic image correction, cropping and tilt shift effects. My pick of a very big bunch - especially as you get to keep the original unaltered image alongside the altered version.

Download 8mm Vintage Camera8MM VINTAGE CAMERA If you want a vintage film look for your videos, look no further than this one (but you might regret it when that video of your baby's first steps is forever marked by skeuomorphic fake hairs and dust motes).

Download iMotion HDiMOTION HD I've tried a lot of timelapse apps for the iPhone. Most of them can be very buggy, or crash halfway through recording. This one seems the most stable and produced the most polished results.

Apps on location

Download MovieSlateMOVIESLATE If you're filming with a DSLR and separate sound recorder, or doing a multi-camera shoot - this digital clapperboard is essential. It's also incredibly comprehensive. Just make sure your iPad is fully charged for a long day's shooting!

Download Teleprompt+TELEPROMPT+ I used this app for filming - when I was in front of the camera! It can be controlled remotely by iPhone using a separate app and wifi. All in all, (slightly) cheaper than hiring a teleprompter and operator.

Useful hardware

The Glif in actionTHE GLIF The iPhone sadly doesn't come with a built-in tripod mount, or an iPad alike stand allowing you to view hands free at a 45 degree angle. The Glif is a tiny bit of plastic which solves all those problems with ease.
